HIKE BLOG
29/01/2010
Yesterday I was in Arlberg again. Blackys father, Blacky Snr had agreed to take us on a tour. So kitted up with split board I met them both and Simon"Holzi" Woodboy at the car park early morning. We took 2 lifts then set off hiking. There was already a fairly good trail so it was an easy mission. At the top we went in the opposite direction as all the other tracks and headed down into this bowl that looked like it was going into a dead-end. On one side there was a huge face with Alaska style lines and then farther down a bunch of cliffs and kicker spots. I took lots of pictures of these spots for future reference. The snow conditions now are pretty marginal so we'll have to wait a bit before taking some riders up to this zone. Thanks to Blacky Snr for showing us the way out and for sharing a tiny bit of his decades of mountain experience with us.

After our short hike Blacky Snr pointed out and named all the main peaks in the distance.

Golden zone, just need about a meter of fresh and it will be on!

COVER BLOG
28/01/2010
Good day today, both these covers dropped into my inbox. One was a surprise the other I knew about but both are making me a happy snapper. A fair bit of work went into making this shot. I had a perspex dome made up in Zurich and then lugged it up to a secret testing facility in Norway. The final shoot took place in Kaunertal sometime in May. Markus "coverboy" Keller had to do about 30 handplants before I was happy with his the way his tongue was looking. Thanks for the hard work buddy.

LAAX BEO HALFPIPE FINALS
27/01/2010
Saturday brought beautiful weather and warmer temperatures. For the finals the pipe was pristine and the riders loved it. In practice Markus Keller slipped out in an unlucky accident and cracked his head. Lucky for him he had a good helmut and this saved him a serious injury. They kept him in hospital for 2 days as a precaution. It was a damn shame as he has been riding the best I've ever seen him lately and would have been a contender for the top spot. The girls started things off but the level was what I would call average. Nah, lets be honest, it was pretty horrible to watch really. I mean this is Europe's biggest halfpipe event and half of the finalists couldn't even get over the coping. I would love to see the judges reward the girls for going big and grabbing their spins. At the moment they don't so you see lots of girls go up the wall, spin a sketchy 720 with absolutely no intention of grabbing or trying to to have good style. The guys were going pretty big and there was a big variety of riding. Old timers Gian Simmen and Xavier Hoffman are still going strong mid thirties while 15 year old Pat Burgener surprised many with his skills. In the end the top 3 were pretty clear cut, all had a double-cork in their run and all were going big.

Pat Burgener first hit Indy tail-bone.

Iouri ended up in 3rd position, somewhat unhappy.

Bruni and Pepe, the Swiss ringmasters. They are actually the Swiss team coaches and as the BEO's theme this year was the Circus they dressed accordingly.

Does that mean No.1 Iouri?

Mikkel Bang was a little reluctant to stop for a picture but when I said I would send it to KP he was cool with it.

LAAX SLOPESTYLE DAY
22/01/2010
I was in Laax, Switzerland this week for the Burton European Open. We had nice weather most of the week, but damn cold! I'd come off the mountain frozen to the core, barely able to make my fingers get money out of my pocket in order to buy a hot drink.

Early on in the week I got in a couple of sweet powder runs with a couple of Kiwi mates, no camera bag, epic! On the friday it was Slopestyle finals.

Sharka did well and got a 3rd place, her run deserved much better though. Mikel Bang did the sickest run ever! That kid has style to burn.

Torgeir pissed off the organizers when he entered the comp under the name of an injured friend. He was riding really good and qualified but then got disqualified. Then he got another slap down when he tripped coming down some steps and rolled his ankle. 2 weeks break and he should be ready to go again.

Mikkel Bang, Cheryl Maas and Sharka Pancochova, getting the lift back up to the top of the slopestyle course.

Sharka was the only girl doing rodeo's. She kills it and the sooner the judges start rewarding the girls for progression and style the better for the sport.

Cheryl Maas tried to ride the comp but lost out in the semifinals. Her knee still needs a bit more rest before she's 100% good to go. Should be got for X-Games, keep a watch out for her there.

INTRODUCING MR CHRISTIAN UNG!
21/01/2010
Introducing Mr Christian Ung!

Head of the Art Dept. at Volcom Europe, Christian is a busy man. Read on to see what he has to say.

1: If you could speak to one type of animal, what would it be?

BANKERS, I JUST CAN’T UNDERSTAND A WORD THEY’RE SAYING. WHEN THEY TALK TO ME I IMAGINE WHAT DOGS THINK WHEN PEOPLE TALK TO THEM. “OUH... THAT’S A GREAT DOG... THAT’S A GOOD DOG... AREN’T YOU CUTE... AREN’T YOU A CUTESY PIE...WHO’S MAMA’S BOY... WHO’S GOING TO LICK THE PEANUT BUTTER...”. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND YOU I’M A F@#CKING DOG!!!

2: If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?

I CAN’T REALLY ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION. TOO MANY PEOPLE I WOULD WANT TO MEET AND HAVE A CHAT WITH. FROM HISTORICAL FIGURES TO GREAT ARTISTS, TO FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS, SOO MANY... AND WHAT IF I CHOOSE ONE AND IT TURNS OUT HE OR SHE’S JUST A PRICK. THEN I’LL HAVE WASTED MY WISH. I RATHER PASS THIS ONE TO SOMEONE THAT HAS A REALLY PRECISE IDEA OF WHO THEY WANT TO MEET?

3: What was the best thing Before sliced bread?

ARE YOU KIDDING? SLICED BREAD? WHO CARES ABOUT SLICED BREAD!!!RICE. RICE IS AWESOME!!! RICE IS LIFE.

4: Whats the best thing about your job?

THE ART TEAM IS A GREAT GROUP OF VERY TALENTED PEOPLE, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH PEOPLE YOU LIKE. AS I SEE IT, I HAVE A JOB WHERE IT’S ASKED TO PUSH THE BOUNDERIES : GET BETTER, DO THINGS FASTER, BE MORE CREATIVE, MAKE STUFF LOOK GREAT... JUST BE AWESOME. I KNOW THAT THERE IS ALOT OF BOUNDERIES THAT CONTROL IT ALL. I’M NOT SOME ARTIST IN A CAVE BY MYSELF CREATING THINGS THAT ONLY PLEASE MY EGO, WE’RE WORKING WITH ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT ALL LOOK FOR ALOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS IN THE DESIGNS THAT ARE MADE. BUT THE CHALLENGE IS THAT THE END OF THE DAY IT LOOKS AWESOME! FOR ME CREATIVITY IS NOT SOME KIND OF OUTLANDISH INSPIRATION THAT COMES AND TOUCHES YOU ONLY WHEN ALL THE CONDITIONS ARE SATISFIED : TOTAL FREEDOM, CHECK; SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE THAT ONLY ADORE ME, CHECK; ALONE AND IN PAIN, CHECK; GOOD LUNCH... NO... THEN I CANNOT CREATE!!! FOR ME CREATIVITY IS SOMEONE THAT SEES OPENINGS WHERE THERE IS ONLY WALLS.

5: Where did you grow up and do you miss it?

I GREW UP IN VIRGINIA (USA), HONG KONG, INDONESIA AND MARSEILLE (FRANCE). I DON’T REALLY MISS ANYTHING OR ANYWHERE. I MISS THE PEOPLE, FRIENDS AND FAMILY, BUT NOT THE PLACES, EVERYPLACE IN THE WORLD HAS IT’S GOOD PARTS AND IT’S BAD PARTS. THE BEST PLACE IS ALLWAYS AHEAD ANYWAY, YESTERDAY WAS JUST THE BUILDING UP.

6: So, you're a self-confessed geek, were you one of the cool kids at school?

NO WAY... SHORT, FAT ASS, ASIAN KID... OBCESSED WITH VIDEO GAMES AND COMIC BOOKS, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW POPULAR I WAS. THE GIRLS WHERE JUST LINING UP TO SLAP ME. I’M STILL NOT PART OF THE COOL KIDS THOUGH, STILL THE BOOK RAT SURROUNDED BY AWESEOME ATHLETES AND ARTISTS. IT’S A PRETTY WEIRD FEELING FOR ME WORKING NOW FOR THE COOOLEST BRAND ON THE MARKET.

7: whens the last time you got barreled?

NEVER HAVE. I CAN’T LIE BECAUSE PEOPLE I KNOW ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO READ THIS. BUT NEVER GOT A BARREL. I WISH I WILL SOMEDAY! I SUCK THOUGH.

8: Whats your proudest moment so far?

MY KIDS. NOT SOO MUCH THEIR BIRTH, BECAUSE LET’S FACE IT, THEY DIDN’T DO MUCH AT THAT TIME. BUT WHENEVER THEY DO SOMETHING NEW OR LEARN SOMETHING ELSE. I’M JUST THE PROUDEST FATHER THER IS!!! MY BOY JUST TOLD ME HE WANTED TO DRAW FOR A LIVING ... THAT JUST FLOORED ME. HE’S JUST FIVE! NOT A POLICEMAN, FIRE FIGHTER, JET PILOT OR JEDI KNIGHT (HE WAS THINKING OF THAT, BUT HE CHANGED HIS MIND, BECAUSE IT’S TOO DANGEROUS), BUT A DRAWER!!!

9: You have a beautiful wife and 2 young kids, how do you juggle it all?

I DON’T SLEEP ALOT. SOMETIMES I THINK THAT IT MAKES GOD ANGRY WHEN I GET MORE THEN 6 HOURS SLEEP. HE ALWAYS FINDS SOMETHING FOR ME TO DO.

DAVOS PIPE DAY
20/01/2010
Another day in St Anton riding my new board and it was time to get back to Davos for the Mens Halfpipe finals. Luckily I left early as it was snowing most of the way, which meant all the german tourists got scared and tiptoed around all the corners at 20km/h. I got flashed by a radar at one point, 120 in a 80 zone, gonna be a nice bill that one! Anyway I made it to Davos in plenty of time. The level of the contest was quiet good and I really enjoyed watching. Volcom team rider, Markus Keller was leading up until the final run when he got knocked down to second by another Volcom rider, Ipod. So we got 1st and 2nd and Marcus also won the highest air award. Between them both they got $31.000. Not too shabby. We all went out for dinner together and after we hit up a bar where Marcus and Loop set up a private bar in the corner and we detroyed about 6 bottles of rum. It was a long and fun night and a very cold walk back to the hotel.

Blacky putting this split board back together for the ride home.

Here Ipod soars above the onlookers. I love the little kid on his tiptoes pointing up at Ipod.

Stale Sandbeck is a 16 year old from Oslo. He's got a bright future!

The park and pipe set-up from my hotel room.

The infamous Drew Stevenson. This was around 2pm and about -15 degrees. He'd had a big night so it seems.

Ipod doing a post podium Tv interview with Rasmus for Method.tv

Ipod and Keller moments after spraying each other in bubbly. Ipod chopped the top off Kellers bottle with his snowboard, thats why Keller is pouring carefully.

SPLITBOARD DAY
15/01/2010
Straight after the Girls halfpipe finals in Davos I decided to drive over to Austria. I didn't feel like hanging around at the contest to watch qualifications. I drove to Klosters and put my car on the Verina train. You just drive on and sit in you car while the train slides through the tunnel and delivers you out the other side. It takes just 20 minutes and saves you a 2 hour drive. The next day in St Anton was bluebird so I called Blacky and we decided to go split-boarding. It was just amazing being outside and deep in the mountains and couldn't have contrasted more to the day before at the contest, loud music, people everywhere etc.

Some fresh powpow sunny skies and a good mate.

Stunning landscape, lit by the sort of light that reminds me why I love to take pictures. I know it well enough but I keep forgetting it. To get this sort of feeling you have to get out in the nature and experience it.

This is where we sat and ate our bread and salami. The mountain is called Patriole and we hiked around the right hand side of it to check out a zone we want to shoot pictures in this season.

In summer this area is an Alp, the farmers bring thier cows up here for a few months and all the amazing cheese gets made up here. The hut in the distance is also a restaurant during these months, hikers and mtn bikers love this area..

DAVOS!
14/01/2010
Tuesday 5th Jan I woke early. This is the real start of winter for me. I packed my bags with enough stuff for at least 2 weeks and was out the door at 7am. Destination was Davos where the Oneill Evolution was happening.

As I got close to a town called Sargans the sun came over the mountain and lit up this scene, so I pulled over and snapped a couple of quickies.

The girls Halfpipe finals were on and Cheryl was invited. On a training run though she slammed hard on her knee and it swelled up massively. Her run of bad luck continues!

Sharka was riding really well, the best style of them all. She was judged a bit hard in my opinion but in the end she did ok.

The Davos set-up.

FIRST POWDER DAY
12/01/2010
With not very high expectations I went to Arlberg on the 1st Jan. I just wanted to get out of the city and hopefully get some turns on the hill. The 2nd was cloudy and snowing a bit but we rode most of the day, dodging the thousands of toursits on the pistes. Towards the end of the day we decided to check out this little zone fully expecting it to be tracked out. Surprise, surprise, not a single track! We did a few runs there until my out-of-shape legs were over it. Next day was bluebird so we hit up a different resort a little higher up the valley. We straight away found a sick run and stuck to that for a couple of hours. It was so nice to ride pow again, even nicer that I didn't have a camera bag weighing me down.

Pretty damn cold but stoked anyway.

Yep, thats fresh! Eve all color co-ordinated and loving the pow.

This is Blackys new whip. He's very proud of it, loves waving to every other Defender that passes and will strongly defend her against all criticisms. Even the top speed of 100km/h, non-excistent reserve tank, falling out back window and leaky roof don't put him off. This one has a good pedigree though, her last owner was a Mr Gigi Ruf.

FRIBOURG VISIT
07/01/2010
On the 24th Dec I was planning on having a chilled day and dinner with the family in laws. But instead I had to drive down to Fribourg, that's about 2 hours from my house. Its right on the divide in Switzerland between where they speak German and French. Its also where Volcom Switzerland is based. There was a whole bunch of stuff that I didn't get to shoot down in Anglet for the catalog so it got shipped to Fribourg and I went and did it there.

Thanks Terry for the awesome lunch!

Fredo, last season he crashed in the Rosti-Graben, arhm, I mean halfpipe and ruined his ACL. Now he's back to full fitness and is a danger on the pistes again.

The grand master, head honcho Terry, here he actually looks like the computer has hypnotized him but normally he's pretty awake

Fabrice the clown, always loud and cracking jokes. Thanks for sending the boxes my way.

LAST NIGHT OF THE SALES MEETING
06/01/2010
On the last night of the sales meeting we all traveled by bus down to Spain for dinner at a Cideria. Typical Basque style restaurant, with big barrels of cider each from a different family brewer in the region. You sit at big tables and they serve you lots of different Tapa's to start off with, then they bring you big steaks, dripping with blood. You pour you own drinks there and there's no limit so things get load and messy.

Thanks Volcom for that experience.

Volcom Events Manager, Jeb, pours himself another

All waiting on the meat.(Apart from any vegetarians in the house, they must have been cringing)

Finance man, Luc going back for seconds.

BBQ man. He literally sears both sides for about 10 seconds and then its off to the tables. I'm not a huge fan but it actually tasted better than I imagined.

Terje got up and said thanks to Volcom and Jan Prokes for inviting him down for the week. Swiss rep Miki was loving the wine!

Frode, Ida and Terje having a giggle.

Miki smuggled a bottle on to the bus for the ride home.

UK Marketing guy Kevin Parrot. He looks pretty scared here, not sure why.

BIARRITZ SCENES
05/01/2010
Just a couple of snaps from around Biarritz on our last days there!

This guys was funny. I guess he's a mechanic or something and this is his workshop. Over 2 days he swapped the engine out of this old car. The next day he had another one up on blocks

Ah, lovely Biarritz. Beautiful coastline, amazing architecture...........

.........Zoom out from the last shot. There must have been a time when the town planner of Biarritz was susceptible to taking a bribe. You see this scene everywhere, beautiful old building and right next door a big ugly Russian style concrete block. Such a shame.

INTERVIEWS
04/01/2010
This season I've decided to interview someone interesting each week. Who better to start with than our mighty leader! Bruno is CEO at Volcom Europe, an easy going guy that takes things in his stride but at the same time commands respect. Read more to find out more about this guy.

1: What do you love about your job?

So many things: I work for my preferred brand. In this industry you're surrounded by a lot of cool people that you deal with every day. We're so close to the ocean to be able to surf at lunch every other day when it's good.

2: You're from Switzerland, living now in France. What do you miss the most?

My friends, pow and Vacherin fondue.

3: I know you can snowboard, surf and skate, which of these do you enjoy most nowdays?

The surf, probably because I missed it the most before I got here and I still progress a lot every day.

4: What was your worst travel experience?

I landed on the Maldives and during the time I was picking my luggage in the airport the Tsunami went over the atoll. After 8 hours of waiting I flew back to Switzerland...imagine the frustration!

5: Will you be watching the Winter Olympic's this year?

Yes sure, but Snowboard only.

6: Which politician would you make a cartoon series with? Sarkozy, Bush, Schwarzenegger, or Berlusconi.

I'm sure all of them have one already but for sure the ones who fit more in a cartoon than into politics are Bush and Schwarzenegger.

7: Which is your favorite language other than your native language?

French, I started to learn it at school as I was 4.

8: What did you want to be when you were 12 years old?

Jet pilot, and actually I still would love to be.. hehe

Happy in his office, good sign that.

One of his favorite pieces, a present from Jamie Lynn..

Terje signed this old Burton Cruzer, keeper for sure.

This was Bruno's first ever skateboard.

That's right, I need a haircut.
